What Wattage Does Your Laptop Actually Need?
Your laptop’s required wattage is printed on the original charger label, and it’s also listed in the laptop’s official spec sheet or support page. HP’s guidance points to that charger label as the quickest way to identify the correct rating. Most brands make the number easy to find: look for “Output” on the brick, and you’ll see voltage and amperage listed, usually as something like 19V and 3.42A.
Multiply the voltage by the amps and you get the wattage. When in doubt, use a charger rated at the same wattage or higher. Going higher is fine — the laptop draws what it needs. Going lower is where problems start.
