A candle wick is the cord at the center that draws melted wax upward to the flame, acting as the fuel line that keeps the fire burning.

The wick of a candle is a braided or plaited fiber core—usually cotton—that sits at the candle’s center and delivers liquid fuel to the flame. The heat of the flame melts the wax, the melted wax rises up through the wick by capillary action, vaporizes, and burns. Without a wick, a candle is just a block of wax that won’t ignite. Understanding how wicks work explains why some candles burn clean and even while others smoke, tunnel, or gutter.

How a Candle Wick Actually Works

Think of the wick as a pump. The flame’s heat melts a pool of wax around the base of the wick. That liquid wax travels upward through the tight weave of the fibers, where it reaches the flame’s heat zone, vaporizes, and combusts. This continuous cycle—melt, wick up, vaporize, burn—is what sustains the flame.

The wick itself doesn’t burn away quickly; it’s designed to last. The flame consumes the vaporized wax, and the wick material slowly carbonizes and curls into the flame’s edge, where it’s consumed at a much slower rate. This design keeps the wick at a fairly constant length so the flame stays steady.

The material matters. Most wicks are braided cotton, chosen because it has the right capillary structure to draw wax efficiently. Some wicks have a thin metal or paper core to keep them upright inside molten wax, and wooden wicks are common in specialty candles for a crackling burn. Each material changes how the candle behaves.

Why Wick Size and Type Matter

Wick diameter, stiffness, and core material all affect burn behavior. A wick that’s too small for the candle diameter won’t create a large enough flame to melt the wax evenly across the top, which causes tunneling—a hollow cylinder that burns down the middle and wastes the outer wax. A wick that’s too large creates an oversized flame that produces excess soot, makes the glass jar overheat, and can cause the candle to burn unevenly.

Different candle styles need different wick constructions:

  • Jar candles typically use a wick with a stabilizing tab at the base, often with a paper or metal core to stand upright in deep melted wax.
  • Pillars and votives use stiffer, thicker wicks because they must stand upright while surrounded by a large pool of liquid wax.
  • Devotional lights use fine, tightly braided wicks matched to the small flame needed for a contained taper.
  • Outdoor candles often use thicker, more robust wicks that hold up in breezy conditions and resist being extinguished by wind.

Assuming all wicks are the same is the most common candle-making mistake. Wick selection is a deliberate engineering choice that determines whether your candle burns clean and even or soots up your walls.

Are Candle Wicks Safe? The Lead Rule

Wicks are safe when they’re made properly. U.S. safety guidance specifically targets one issue: lead content in metal-cored wicks. Not all metal cores are a problem—the concern is what the metal contains.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) restricts lead in metal-cored candlewicks to no more than 0.06% by weight. That standard applies to any candle or wick manufactured or imported for the U.S. market on or after October 15, 2003. The CPSC’s guidance also notes there’s no certification requirement for non-metal-cored wicks, meaning cotton and wood wicks don’t carry the same paperwork burden.

Lead was once used in wick cores to keep them upright, but the concern was real: burning a lead-core wick can release lead particles into the air. The 2003 rule effectively removed lead from the U.S. candle supply. If you buy candles made for the U.S. market today, the wicks are compliant by law. If you make your own candles, use wicks from a reputable supplier that states they’re lead-free.

European industry guidelines from the European Candle Association echo the same core position: lead in wicks is a safety issue, and the industry moved away from it voluntarily well before regulation required it.
