Body filler is the standard fix for dings and shallow dents that haven’t broken through the metal. The material — often called Bondo, the best-known brand name — bridges low spots so the panel is smooth again and ready for paint. It won’t fix structural damage, rust, or deep creases that compromise the metal underneath.

Working with body filler is forgiving if you respect a few rules: thorough prep, accurate mixing, thin coats, and proper sanding. Here’s the complete process, from cleaning the panel to applying the final coat, based on 3M’s current Bondo® technical guidance.

What You Need Before You Start

Body filler is a two-part polyester system: a grey paste and a red cream hardener. You’ll also need a mixing board, a flexible spreader, 80- and 180-grit sandpaper, and a cleaning solvent. The filler itself comes in cans from brands like 3M’s Bondo® Original Filler or Bondo® Filler & Resin, which 3M describes as an all-purpose solution for repairing dents, dings, and scratches in the home or on a car.

Before anything else, 3M says to wash the surface with soap and water, then follow up with a low-VOC compliant cleaner. This removes wax, grease, and road film that would otherwise prevent the filler from bonding. The repair area also needs to be dry — moisture trapped under the filler leads to failure down the road.

Preparing The Panel: Sand To Bare Metal

Body filler only sticks to a properly roughened surface, so skip this step and the repair won’t hold. Sand the dented area down to bare metal or a fully cured factory primer using 80-grit paper, feathering the edges so the repair blends into the surrounding paint.

According to Home Depot’s Bondo technical sheet, this step is critical: the substrate must be clean, sanded, and roughed up before any filler goes on. Wipe away the sanding dust with a tack cloth and solvent one final time — the panel should look dull and scratched, never shiny.

Mixing And Applying The Filler: Ratios And Thin Coats

Once the panel is prepped, mix only as much filler as you can use in 3–4 minutes — that’s the working time at 75°F, per the Bondo technical sheet.

Mix on a non-absorbent surface like plastic or metal, using a spreading and pressing motion rather than stirring. Stirring whips air into the mix, and trapped air becomes pinholes in the cured filler. You’ll see when it’s ready: the color becomes completely uniform with no streaks of red or grey.

Apply the filler with a flexible spreader, pressing it firmly into the sanded surface and pulling it across the dent. Work in thin layers — one coat should never exceed about ¼ inch. Thick single coats are harder to sand and shrink as they cure, which ruins the repair. For deeper dents, let the first layer cure and build up with subsequent thin coats. The surface should be slightly proud of the surrounding panel, since you’ll sand it down flush.

Temperature matters for curing. The Bondo technical sheet says to use the product above 45°F, with best results in ambient 64–75°F. Below that range, the cure slows dramatically and full hardness may never develop.

Sanding, Priming, And Painting The Repair

Start with 80-grit to knock down the bulk of the filler and shape the repair, then switch to 180-grit to smooth the surface and feather the edges into the original paint. Sand in even strokes, checking frequently with your hand — the area should feel perfectly flat and flush with the panel.

Once the filler is feathered and smooth, wipe off the dust and apply a quality automotive primer to seal the filler and give the paint something to grip. Let the primer cure, sand it lightly with 180-grit or finer, then paint per the manufacturer’s instructions. If the repair is near a panel edge or crease, a flexible additive or glazing putty on top can prevent the filler from cracking during flexing.
