How to Install Bike Grips | Swap Them in 10 Minutes

Installing new bike grips takes about 10 minutes with the right technique and a clean handlebar.

New grips transform the feel of your bike, but the process trips up plenty of riders on the first try. Slippery soapy water, stuck old grips, and over-tightened lock-on bolts are the usual suspects. The good news: the whole job comes down to one solid method that works across most grip styles, and the steps below break it out in plain order.

Removing Old Bike Grips

Slide a flat-blade screwdriver under the grip edge and work it around to break the seal. Then inject soapy water, rubbing alcohol, or brake cleaner between the grip and the bar to loosen the bond. Twist the grip back and forth while pulling; it usually slides off within a few seconds.

Ergon’s guide notes that grips without screw clamps respond well to soapy water, alcohol, or brake cleaner worked under the rubber. If a grip refuses to budge, compressed air directed into the opening often breaks the seal without damaging the bar.

Cleaning and Prepping the Handlebar

Wipe the handlebar clean of old rubber residue, dust, and corrosion before anything goes back on. A grip sliding over grit will sit unevenly and can rotate under load. Contec’s installation guide stresses a clean bar surface as the foundation for a secure fit.

For lock-on grips, this step is quick. For slip-on grips, a clean bar also matters because the bonding agent — hairspray or grip adhesive — needs to contact bare metal, not old rubber dust.

Installing Lock-On Grips

Lock-on grips use a hard plastic inner sleeve and clamp rings at one or both ends. Loosen the clamp bolts with the correct Allen key before sliding the grip on. Align the grip to your preferred rotation, then tighten the bolts gradually in small turns, alternating sides if the grip has two clamps.

Tighten to the manufacturer’s torque spec when provided. MSW’s grip instructions specify 3 Nm for single-clamp grips and caution against exceeding 4 Nm unless the handlebar maker states otherwise. Overtightening can crush or crack the handlebar, and undertightening lets the grip twist under load.

Fine-tune the grip rotation before the final tighten, then align your shifters and brake levers. Take a short test ride and check that the grips stay put under firm pressure.

Installing Slip-On Grips

Slip-on grips rely on friction and a bonding agent. Coat the inside of the grip and the handlebar with rubbing alcohol or hairspray, then slide the grip on with a twisting motion while the agent is still wet. The liquid lubricates briefly, then evaporates or dries into a tacky bond.

Seat the grip fully so the outer end sits flush with the bar end. Wipe away any excess agent, then let the bond set before riding.

For one-piece grips that cover the full bar, MSW recommends coating the bar and grip interior with rubbing alcohol or hairspray and installing quickly. Compressed air can also help seat a stubborn one-piece grip.

Avoid hairspray if you plan to remove the grips soon — it’s a strong bond and needs solvent to break. Rubbing alcohol gives an easier future removal and is the safer default for most riders.

Twist-Shifter Compatibility

Some grips are purpose-built for twist shifters and come shortened on one or both sides to leave room for the shifter mechanism. Ergon’s GP1 Gripshift, GP2 Gripshift, and GP3 Gripshift fit both-sided twist systems, while the GA3 Twist Shift and GC1 serve one-sided setups.

Product listings spell out compatibility with specific systems like SRAM Gripshift, Rohloff Speedhub, Shimano Nexus, Shimano Alfine, and Pinion — check before buying.

Once your new grips are on and secure, the final step is a quick test ride to confirm nothing slips.

Grip Style Install Method Torque Limit
Lock-on Slide on, tighten Allen bolts 3 Nm typical; max 4 Nm
Slip-on Lubricate, slide, let bond dry N/A — no bolts
Twist-shifter Match shifter side(s), align before tight Check product spec
