What the Device Label Tells You First

Copy the voltage from the device label, not from the adapter that came with it and not from memory. If the label is worn or missing, check the original manual or the manufacturer’s support page before guessing. A wrong guess on voltage is the fastest way to damage the device.
Why Doesn’t Any 12V Adapter Work?
Because “12V” only fixes one of four variables. A 12V adapter can still have the wrong polarity, the wrong plug diameter, or too little current capacity. Each of those mismatches either stops the device from powering on or damages it.
Voltage must match exactly: 12V means 12V, not 11V and not 13V. Current is different. The adapter’s amp rating is the maximum it can supply, so a 12V 3A adapter is fine for a device that draws 1A. A lower-current adapter is not fine when the device draws more than the adapter can deliver — expect overheating, sagging voltage, shutdowns, or damage.
Polarity is the easy one to miss. Most barrel adapters are center-positive or center-negative, and the two are not interchangeable. The device’s label and the adapter should both show the same polarity symbol. If they disagree, do not plug it in.
Barrel size matters just as much. The most common 12V barrel sizes are 5.5×2.1mm and 5.5×2.5mm. The first number is the outer diameter, the second is the inner pin diameter, and they are not interchangeable. A 2.5mm-pin adapter can feel loose in a 2.1mm socket; forcing it can damage the jack.
