Your alarm is loud because it uses a separate alarm-volume setting that is independent of your media volume and may have been turned up.

Alarms on iPhones, Android phones, and Alexa devices each have their own dedicated volume control, separate from the general volume you use for music and videos. So if your alarm blasts you out of bed, it’s usually because that specific alarm volume got set high, not because your phone’s media volume is up. Here’s where to find each one.
How To Lower Your iPhone Alarm Volume
Apple’s support documentation says the iPhone alarm uses the same volume slider as your ringtone and alerts — not your media volume. To adjust it, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and drag the Ringtone and Alerts slider to the left to make alarms quieter.
One sneaky reason your alarm may be too loud: the Change with Buttons toggle. When this is on, your physical volume keys adjust the ringer and alarm volume instead of media volume, so you can accidentally raise the alarm level while just trying to change a song. Keep it off if you want your side buttons to control media only.
If your alarm is still too loud, Apple says you can also press the volume-down button when the alarm sounds, or revisit the Ringtone and Alerts slider to fine-tune it. The media volume slider will not change how loud your alarm rings.
Adjusting The Alarm Volume On Android
Android keeps alarm volume as a completely separate control from media, calls, and notifications. Google’s help page says to press any volume button, then tap the menu icon that appears to expand the volume panel, and slide the Alarm volume bar to your preferred level.
This setting lives independently from your media volume, so turning music down won’t make your alarm quieter — and vice versa. If you don’t see the alarm slider right away, check that you’re expanding the full volume panel rather than just dragging the top bar. Some phone makers layer their own interface over Android’s settings, so a slider might sit under Sound > Volume instead.
Control Alexa Alarm Volume In The App
Amazon manages alarm volume through the Alexa app, not the Echo’s physical volume buttons. Open the app, go to More > Alarms & Timers, open the Alarms tab, tap Settings, and use the volume slider to lower it.
A common reason an Alexa alarm feels too loud is the Ascending Alarm feature. When enabled, it gradually raises the volume over time instead of holding a fixed level, which makes the alarm seem louder as it progresses. Toggle this off in the same settings screen if you want a constant, predictable volume.
Why Does My Alarm Sound Louder Than I Expect?
Most perceived loudness problems come down to the separation between volume controls. On iPhone, the Change with Buttons setting means your side keys can silently raise alarm volume when you think you’re adjusting something else. On Android, the alarm slider sits on its own level in the volume panel. And on Alexa, the Ascending Alarm option changes loudness dynamically.
If you’ve adjusted all the right settings and your alarm still doesn’t fit your needs, the phone’s speaker itself may simply be too quiet or too harsh at high levels. A dedicated bedside unit gives you physical buttons and consistent sound.
