What You Need Before the Adhesive Goes On

Choosing the Right Trowel and Adhesive Class
Your trowel notch size should match the tile format and the flatness of the substrate. For most wall tiles, a 6 mm notched trowel works; floors with larger tile need a 10 mm or 12 mm notch. The goal is ridges tall enough to collapse fully under the tile without leaving air pockets.
The adhesive class matters just as much. Technical documentation commonly specifies C2TE, C2F, and S1 classes for porcelain — C2TE for standard porcelain with its improved adhesion and extended open time, C2F when you need rapid setting, and S1 when the tile needs higher deformability to absorb movement. The Step-by-Step Application Method for Porcelain
Here is the order that produces a void-minimized, solid bond. Take it slow in the spreading stage; rushing there is the most expensive error you can make.
Step 1: Key the substrate. Use the flat side of the trowel to spread a thin, even skim coat onto the substrate. This “keying” coat gives the ridges something to bite into.
Step 2: Comb the adhesive. Switch to the notched side and hold the trowel at a 45-degree angle to form uniform ridges. Comb in one direction only — never in a crosshatch pattern. Keep the ridges parallel so air can escape when the tile lands.
Step 3: Back-butter the tile. For porcelain, this step is not optional. Use the flat side of the trowel to apply a thin coat of adhesive to the tile’s back. For large-format or thin porcelain panels, double-buttering — adhesive on both substrate and tile back — is recommended to achieve the target coverage. Fill any ribbed, deep-keyed, or profiled backs completely before the tile goes down.
Step 4: Set within the working time. Do not spread more adhesive than you can cover in 30 to 45 minutes, and never let the surface skin over before the tile touches it. If the adhesive has skinned, scrape it off and re-comb; setting on a skinned surface guarantees a weak bond.
