Every pesticide label assumes a backpack sprayer spray rate — a target volume per acre that the label’s dosage math depends on.
Spray rate is volume over area — gallons per acre (GPA) in U.S. field terms. No gauge on the rig shows it; the number comes from a calibration test, and there are two field tests built for backpacks: the 1/128-acre catch and the 1,000-square-foot refill.
Labels for broadcast work use GPA; spot and band treatments often use gallons per 1,000 square feet — so pick the test that matches the label in front of you.
What Your Sprayer’s Spray Rate Actually Means
The rate is a product, not a setting: nozzle output, walking speed, swath width, and the pressure your pumping keeps up all multiply together. Change any one and GPA changes.
Swath width is simply the width of the wet pattern the wand lays down at your working height — drop the wand and the pattern narrows, so measure it the way you actually spray.
Backpack and spray-gun rigs commonly come out between 20 and 150 GPA in calibration trials, wide enough that guessing can double a dose.
How Do You Measure A Backpack Sprayer’s Spray Rate?
Both methods compare what the rig puts down with what the label requires. Calibrate with plain water, never the real mix, on level ground and at the pace and pump rhythm you’ll actually use.

Try one practice pass before timing, since pumping on a real walk differs from bench testing.
