Using an oxygen acetylene torch means leak-testing joints, lighting acetylene first, adding oxygen to neutral, then shutting down in reverse order.
Acetylene can’t be treated like propane or MAPP gas. Above 15 PSI it becomes unstable on its own, so torch technique starts at the regulator, not the flame. The whole routine for using an oxygen acetylene torch is a fixed order — inspect, leak-test, purge, light fuel first, add oxygen to a neutral flame, shut down in reverse — and every step in that order exists for a reason.
This guide walks through the sequence with the pressure numbers, the valve order, and the mistakes that produce pops, flashbacks, and regulator fires. Read it before the first spark, not after.
Before Lighting: Inspect, Connect, And Leak-Test
The setup routine exists to catch problems while the gas is still off: inspect the gear, connect the right gas to the right fitting, and prove every joint is tight before anything ignites.
- Inspect everything. Check the cylinders, valves, hoses, regulators, torch body, and tips for damage — cracked or burned hoses, worn threads, and dents all count. Remove any oil or grease, especially on oxygen equipment. Secure cylinders upright and keep the valve caps on during transport.
- Check flashback protection. Install check valves or flashback arrestors where your setup calls for them — they stop a flame from traveling back up the hose into the regulator.
- Connect each gas to its own side. Oxygen goes to the oxygen fitting with right-hand threads. Acetylene uses left-hand threads on its fittings, so if a connection won’t thread on smoothly, it’s the wrong one — never force it.
- Open cylinder valves slowly. Oxygen can be opened fully. Acetylene gets about 1 to 1.5 turns of opening so the valve can be shut quickly in an emergency.
- Leak-test every connection with soapy water or an approved leak-detection solution. Bubbles mean a leak — tighten and retest. Never use a flame to find a gas leak.
- Purge each line separately before lighting so no mixed gas sits in the hoses.
Hoses take the most abuse of any part of the rig, so inspect them along their full length, not just at the fittings. If a hose is cracked, oil-soaked, or burned, don’t patch it — replace it.
What Pressure Should The Regulators Show?
Start low and let the tip chart set the final number: roughly 10 PSIG is a common starting delivery pressure for oxy-fuel work, and acetylene must never be set above 15 PSI at the regulator.
That 15-PSI ceiling isn’t a suggestion. Acetylene becomes unstable at higher pressures and can break down on its own, which is why equipment rated for the gas carries the same limit. Set the acetylene regulator to about 10 PSIG, then check the chart that came with your cutting or welding tip and adjust both gases to its recommended pressures. The torch, hoses, regulators, and tips must all be rated for acetylene — propane-rated gear is not interchangeable, and mixing fuel systems is how regulators fail.
Oxygen Acetylene Torch Shutdown: The Valve Order That Matters
Lighting is fuel-first: open the acetylene valve on the torch just enough to hear gas, light it with a friction striker, then add oxygen until the flame settles into a sharp inner cone — a neutral flame. Never open both torch valves before lighting.
Shutting down reverses that order.
- Close the torch’s oxygen valve first, then close the acetylene valve on the torch. The flame goes out cleanly, with no pop.
- Close both cylinder valves once the torch is off.
- Bleed each line separately. Open the torch valve on one side until its gauge reads zero, close it, then repeat on the other side. Bleeding both lines at the same time can let gas backfeed between them.
- Back the regulator adjusting screws out so the regulators sit relaxed until the next session.
The mistakes that cause trouble all break this order: lighting both gases at once, skipping the purge, running acetylene past its pressure limit, or using damaged hoses and tips. Each one is easy to do in a hurry and exactly why the sequence above is non-negotiable.
