The receiver hitch is the most common towing connection system in North America, and understanding how it works comes down to knowing a few key terms: receiver size, hitch class, and weight ratings. What Does a Receiver Hitch Look Like and How Does It Work?
A receiver hitch bolts to the underside of your vehicle and features a square steel tube opening at the rear. That opening, called the receiver tube, accepts the shank of a ball mount or the stem of another accessory. A hitch pin slides through both the tube and the accessory shank to lock everything together.
Receiver openings come in four standard sizes: 1-1/4″, 2″, 2-1/2″, and 3″. The size refers to the inside dimensions of the tube, and the most common by far is the 2″ receiver found on pickup trucks, SUVs, and crossovers. Accessories must match the receiver size — a 2″ ball mount will not fit a 1-1/4″ receiver, and using an adapter introduces a weak point that can compromise safety.
The receiver itself never touches the trailer. It is the anchor point, and the ball mount, cargo carrier, bike rack, or other accessory plugs into it to complete the connection.

Every hitch is stamped with its gross trailer weight (GTW) and tongue weight (TW) ratings. GTW is the total weight of the fully loaded trailer, and tongue weight is the downward force the trailer exerts on the hitch ball. Both numbers matter, and exceeding either one is unsafe regardless of the vehicle’s capability.

Hitch Capacity Is Only as Strong as the Weakest Link
Towing capacity is always limited by the lowest-rated component in the entire system: the hitch, the ball mount, the ball itself, the trailer, or the vehicle. A Class 5 hitch on a midsize crossover does not make that crossover capable of towing 20,000 lbs. The vehicle’s own tow rating, set by the manufacturer, is a hard ceiling the hitch cannot raise.
Curt Manufacturing, one of the largest hitch makers in North America, explains this plainly in its hitch buying guide: every component in the towing system must be rated for the load you plan to pull. That means verifying the vehicle’s tow rating first, then choosing a hitch class that meets or exceeds the trailer’s gross weight and tongue weight.
This is the most common mistake new towers make. They install a heavy-duty hitch and assume the truck can now pull anything. It cannot. The manufacturer’s tow rating for your specific year, make, and model — found in the owner’s manual — governs what you can safely pull.
Weight-Carrying vs. Weight-Distributing: Knowing the Difference
Class 3 hitches are weight-carrying by default, meaning the trailer’s full tongue weight rests on the hitch ball and transfers directly to the vehicle’s rear. Some Class 3 hitches are also rated for weight-distributing setups, which use spring bars to spread that load across the vehicle’s front and rear axles for more stable handling.
Not every Class 3 hitch is rated for both. The hitch’s label or documentation states whether weight distribution is approved. Using a weight-distribution system on a hitch not rated for it can overstress the hitch and the vehicle frame.
A higher-class drawbar or a heavier ball mount does not increase the hitch’s capacity either. The hitch rating is fixed, and the accessory simply needs to match or exceed it. adjustable hitch receivers that fit multiple ball sizes add convenience but do not change the rated limits stamped on the hitch itself.
Hitches sold in North America are tested to meet V-5 and SAE J684 standards, which set the structural requirements for everything from the welds to the pin hole placement. That testing ensures the rated numbers are real, but it does not account for mismatched components or an overloaded trailer.
Before you buy, look up your vehicle by year, make, and model to confirm fitment, then weigh your loaded trailer to confirm both gross trailer weight and tongue weight. Match the receiver size and class to the ball mount and accessories you plan to use, and confirm whether the hitch supports weight distribution if your trailer needs it.
