There’s no universal toggle for AI Overviews — the only way to enable them is through Search Labs, and even then they only appear for certain queries.
Knowing how to enable AI Overview in Google Search starts with understanding what you are actually asking for. AI Overviews are not a feature you switch on in Settings. They are AI-generated summaries Google chooses to show for some search results, and the only user-facing control lives inside Search Labs. Even with that toggle flipped on, your query and account eligibility determine whether you actually see one. This article walks through the real process and explains why it sometimes does not work.
What Exactly Are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google Search results, pulling information from multiple sources and linking to them. Google announced the feature on May 14, 2024, rolling it out to everyone in the U.S. with more countries added later. These summaries are not a replacement for classic Search results — Google only shows them when its systems decide they are useful or additive to the search experience.
Each overview surfaces source links so you can verify the information. AI Overviews are distinct from AI Mode, which is a separate conversational tool accessed through a dedicated page or app button.
Enabling AI Overviews in Google Search — The Only User-Facing Method
If your Google Account is eligible, you can control AI Overviews through Search Labs. No paid subscription or special software is needed, but you must be signed in and Incognito mode must be off. Google’s official U.S. rollout announcement confirmed the feature is available to everyone in the country, though exact access still varies by account and query.
On Desktop (Any Browser)
Sign in to your Google Account, make sure Incognito mode is off, and open a new tab. Click the Labs icon or navigate to Manage from the Labs menu. Find AI Overviews and more and toggle it on. Once enabled, Google may show AI Overviews for relevant queries — but not for every search you run.
On Android
Open any browser on your Android device, sign in to your Google Account, and turn off Incognito. Tap Labs at the top of the Search results page, then use the controls for AI Overviews. Tap Show more at the bottom of an AI Overview to expand the detailed view with source links.
These two paths are the only officially documented ways to enable AI Overviews. If the Labs option does not appear on your account, your region or account may not have access yet — availability can change without notice as Google refines the feature.
Reasons AI Overviews Stay Hidden After You Enable Them
Even with the Search Labs toggle turned on, AI Overviews will not show for every search. Google evaluates each query and decides whether an overview adds value. Many searches return a standard Featured Snippet instead, which is normal behavior. If you have enabled the toggle but still do not see AI Overviews, one of the following issues is likely at play.
| Issue | Why It Happens | What To Do |
|---|---|---|
| Query does not trigger AI Overviews | Google only shows AI Overviews when it determines they are useful; simple or navigational queries rarely trigger them. | Try a more complex or explanatory query to see if the feature activates. |
| Incognito mode is on | Google’s instructions require Incognito to be off for the Labs toggle to apply. | Turn off Incognito and reload the search. |
| Search Labs toggle is off | The Labs toggle is the only user-facing control; if it is off, AI Overviews will not appear. | Sign in, go to Labs, and toggle AI Overviews and more on. |
| Account is not eligible | Some accounts or regions may not have access yet due to the gradual rollout. | Check whether the Labs option appears; try a different Google Account or wait. |
| Not in a supported region | AI Overviews are rolling out in phases; the U.S. is fully supported as of May 2024. | If outside the U.S., availability may be limited or still coming. |
| Featured Snippet appears instead | Google may prefer a traditional Featured Snippet over an AI Overview for that search. | This is normal — the search is working as intended. |
AI Overviews are still being adjusted, so availability can shift without notice. Seeing a Featured Snippet instead is not a sign that something is broken.
What’s the Difference Between AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Google offers two separate AI-powered features in Search, and confusing them is a common source of frustration. AI Overviews appear automatically within standard Search results when triggered. AI Mode is a standalone conversational tool accessed at google.com/ai or by tapping AI Mode in the Google app on Android. The steps for enabling AI Overviews do not apply to AI Mode, which has its own access path.
| Feature | AI Overviews | AI Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Inside standard Google Search results | Separate page at google.com/ai or via the Google app |
| How to access | Toggle in Search Labs (if eligible); triggers automatically for some queries | Navigate directly to google.com/ai or tap AI Mode in the app |
| Experience | AI-generated summary with source links | Conversational AI interface for follow-up questions |
| User control | Search Labs toggle (on or off) | Access via URL or app button |
AI Mode is not affected by the Search Labs toggle for AI Overviews. If you want a conversational AI search tool, use AI Mode directly.
Making Sense of AI Overviews in Google Search
AI Overviews are not a feature you fully control — Google decides when to show them. Your side of the job is straightforward: sign in, turn off Incognito, enable the AI Overviews and more toggle in Search Labs, and run queries that invite an explanatory answer. If AI Overviews do not appear after that, consult the reasons table above. The feature is still evolving, and availability will continue to shift as Google expands the rollout.
