To erase contacts in Gmail, you delete them in Google Contacts (contacts.google.com). Deleted entries move to Trash and are permanently removed after 30 days.
One wrong tap sends an email to the wrong address. Another lands in the right inbox but with an awkward silence on the other end. A clean contact list fixes both problems, but you won’t find a delete button anywhere inside Gmail’s main interface. How to erase contacts in Gmail comes down to one tool: Google Contacts, the address book that syncs directly with your account. Here is exactly how to find it, use it, and clean your list for good.
How Deleting Contacts in Gmail Actually Works
Gmail itself does not have a native delete button for contacts. The address book lives separately at contacts.google.com or inside the Contacts section of the Gmail app on Android. When you delete a contact from Google Contacts, it moves to the Trash folder. Permanent deletion happens automatically after 30 days, or you can manually empty the Trash immediately.
Deleting a contact removes only the entry in your address book. It does not delete any emails or affect your message history with that person.
| Platform | Where to Delete | Bulk Delete Supported? |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop (PC / Mac / Linux) | Google Contacts (web) | Yes |
| Android | Gmail app → Contacts | Yes |
| iPhone / iPad | Google Contacts app (third-party) | Yes |
| Google Workspace | Google Contacts (web) | Yes |
Delete Contacts on Desktop (Computer)
The desktop method is the most direct route and supports bulk operations. Open Google Contacts in any browser and log in with the Gmail account you want to clean up.
- Hover over a name and check the box that appears. To select multiple, check several boxes. To select everything, click the down arrow at the top left and choose All.
- Click the three dots (More) at the top right.
- Click Delete → Move to trash.
- To erase them permanently right away, open the Trash folder in the left sidebar, select the contacts, and click Delete forever.
Delete a Contact on Android
Android users can delete directly from the Gmail app. Open the app, tap the three-line menu, scroll down, and tap Contacts. Tap the contact you want to remove, tap the three dots at the top right, and choose Delete. For bulk deletions, switch to the desktop version of Google Contacts for the fastest experience.
Can You Delete Contacts in the Gmail App on iPhone?
No. The iOS Gmail app does not include the Contacts module that Android has. To delete contacts from your Google account on an iPhone or iPad, you need the standalone Google Contacts app from the App Store. Once installed, the steps are the same as Android: open the app, choose a contact, and select Delete from the menu.
The 30-Day Trash and Recovery Window
When you delete a contact it goes to the Trash folder. Google holds deleted contacts there for 30 days. During that time you can open Trash, select the contact, and tap Recover to restore it. After 30 days the system deletes it permanently, and it cannot be recovered.
If you deleted a contact more than 30 days ago, you still have one option. Google Contacts keeps a version history of your address book, and the Undo changes feature in Settings lets you roll back up to 30 days of edits. This can restore contacts that were removed in a bulk cleanup, even if they already emptied from Trash.
| Action | Result | Recovery Window |
|---|---|---|
| Move to Trash | Hidden from main contact list | 30 days |
| Delete Forever | Removed immediately | None |
| Undo Changes (Settings) | Restores address book to an earlier state | Up to 30 days |
What Happens When You Delete an “Other Contact”?
Gmail stores people you email but have not manually added in a special section called Other Contacts. These are automatically created entries, and they behave differently from regular contacts. Deleting an “Other Contact” does not send it to the Trash folder. It simply removes the auto-suggestion from your compose window. If you want to get it back within 30 days, use the Undo changes tool in Google Contacts settings.
Another exception: you cannot delete contacts that belong to a shared directory. If the person appears under a Directory section in Google Contacts, it means the address is managed by a school, company, or organization. Only personal contacts that you added can be removed.
The fastest and most reliable way to erase contacts in Gmail is to skip the inbox entirely and go straight to Google Contacts on your computer. Select the entries you want to remove and move them to Trash. That single step clears your list, removes the address from autocomplete, and keeps your remaining contacts organized.
