UV rays and weather turn that rich black plastic cladding on your car into a faded, chalky gray. The good news: you can usually bring it back. The process isn’t complicated, but skipping the prep work is the fastest way to waste your money on a bottle of restorer. Here’s the sequence that actually works, what products to use, and when to accept that the plastic is too far gone.

Why Plastic Trim Fades and What Fixes It

Exterior automotive trim is usually polypropylene or ABS plastic with UV stabilizers mixed in. Over time, sun exposure breaks down the stabilizers, and the plastic’s surface becomes porous and chalky. A true trim restorer works by either re-dyeing the surface or depositing a protective coating that fills the porous layer and blocks further UV damage. Plain dressings or household oils just sit on top and wash off in the next rain.

Knowing what you’re dealing with matters: if the plastic is still dark but dull, a restorer will work well. If the surface is powdery to the touch or cracked, you’re closer to needing a black plastic stain or a full trim replacement.

The Core Process: Clean, Restore, Cure

Every successful restoration follows the same three-phase workflow. Skip any step and the result will be streaky, patchy, or gone in a week.

Phase 1: Deep Clean the Trim

Dirt, wax, silicone, and old dressing all block restorer adhesion. Wash the whole car first, then hit the trim specifically with an all-purpose cleaner or a dedicated plastic cleaner. A soft detailing brush agitates the cleaner into the plastic’s texture. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely. Some enthusiasts use a heat gun on a low setting to bring oil back to the surface of old plastic, but this is risky. Overheating can warp the trim or melt texture, and the effect is temporary — usually weeks, not months. If you try this, move the gun constantly and never focus on one spot.
