How to Pack Your Backpacking Pack | Weight Where It Counts

Pack a backpacking pack by placing heavy, dense items closest to your back and centered, light bulky items at the bottom, and frequently used gear near the top or in outer pockets for stability and comfort on the trail.

Nobody likes a pack that wobbles with every step or digs into your shoulders after the first mile. The real trick isn’t how much you bring—it’s where each item sits inside the bag. Zone 1 — Bottom (light, bulky, rarely needed)
Your sleeping bag or sleep system goes here. This is the softest, least-dense layer and sits at the very bottom of the pack. If you use a compression sack for the sleeping bag, you can shrink this zone by nearly half and create more usable space above it. Stuff smaller items—camp sandals, a stuff sack of extra socks—into gaps around the bag.

Zone 2 — Middle, against the back panel (heavy, dense, centered)
This zone does the heavy lifting—literally. The AMC says the heaviest items should sit closest to the harness and centered about two-thirds of the way up the main compartment’s vertical axis. Your tent, food bag, stove and fuel, cookware, and water reservoir all belong here, pressed against your spine. Step-by-Step Loading Sequence

Follow this exact order once your gear is sorted into piles and non-essentials have been cut from the load.

  1. Loosen all compression straps before you put a single item inside. Loaded straps that get tightened over bulging gear create pressure points and uneven weight distribution.
  2. Load Zone 1 first — drop the sleeping bag (compressed or not) straight into the bottom of the main compartment.
  3. Place Zone 2 items against your back. The MEC says to pack heaviest items closest to your spine first. Stack the tent, food bag, and cookware vertically here, keeping the center of mass at chest-to-waist height.
  4. Fill gaps with smaller items — stuff fuel canisters into the space beside the cook pot, slide a water filter pouch into the side of the food bag. Every cubic inch counts.
  5. Pack Zone 3 on top. Rain jacket, insulating layer, and first-aid kit go last, within arm’s reach without opening the main drawstring.
  6. Tighten compression straps from bottom to top after loading. The goal is to pull the load closer to your back, eliminating sway and preventing items from shifting as you walk.

Waterproofing and Common Mistakes

Even with a weather-resistant pack shell, humidity and rain find their way inside. The simplest waterproofing method is a heavy-duty trash compactor bag used as a pack liner—the MEC recommends this for nearly all conditions. Inside that, use dry bags for your sleeping bag and electronics. Down sleeping bags especially must stay completely dry to retain any insulating value; one wet night ends a trip.

Three mistakes that ruin the load every time:

The American Hiking Society gives a clear sequence: the hip belt should sit on your hip bones—not above them—and gets tightened first. Shoulder straps come second, followed by the load-lifter straps that angle the top of the pack toward your body. The sternum strap crosses last and should be snug but not restrictive to breathing. Tighten the hip belt first, then the shoulder straps, and finally the load lifters.
