When your refrigerator’s ice maker goes silent, the problem is rarely a broken appliance. Most often it’s a control setting, temperature issue, or water-supply restriction you can fix in minutes. Working through these checks in order—power first, then temperature, then water—resolves the majority of cases without a service call. Here’s the practical sequence that gets ice cubes back in your glass.

Check the Basics: Power, Arm, and Temperature

Start with the simplest possibilities. Confirm the ice maker is switched on—some models have a control arm you lift to stop production, and it’s easy to bump accidentally. Whirlpool specifically says to check that the control arm is in the on position, and if it’s loose, tighten it; if it’s broken, contact a professional rather than forcing it.

The freezer temperature matters more than most people realize. GE recommends setting the freezer to 0°F, and Whirlpool agrees—0°F (-18°C) is the target for normal operation. The refrigerator compartment should sit at 37°F per GE, or within Whirlpool’s 33–40°F range.

A low food load also hurts performance. GE notes that a freezer only partially full has less stable temperatures; keeping it 3/4 or more full helps maintain the cold needed for ice production.

Inspect the Water Supply Line and Filter

Restricted water flow is the next most common culprit. KitchenAid’s guidance is straightforward: confirm the water line is securely connected, the shutoff valve is fully open, and there are no kinks or blockages. If the line is bent or twisted, straighten it to restore pressure and flow.

The water filter deserves attention too. Both GE and Whirlpool recommend changing refrigerator water filters every six months. An overdue filter restricts flow, and a freshly replaced one can also cause a brief interruption as air clears from the system. If you recently moved the refrigerator or had it installed, that disruption alone can pause production temporarily.

Reset the Ice Maker and Clear Any Jams

If power and water check out, a reset often clears the fault. The method depends on your model:

  • KitchenAid: Locate the reset button on the ice maker and press and hold it for a few seconds. If there’s no reset button, unplug the refrigerator for one minute and plug it back in.
  • Samsung: Press and hold the Test button until you hear a chime—Samsung’s guidance says this may take up to 10 seconds.
  • GE and Whirlpool: If no dedicated button exists, look for a control arm or switch and toggle it off, wait a few minutes, then turn it back on.

Frozen fill tubes and ice jams in the bin are common after a thaw or a power outage. Check the ice bin for clumps blocking the ejector mechanism. Never use sharp tools to pry out ice—you risk puncturing lines or damaging components.
