Digital bathroom scales drift. Over months of use, springs settle and sensors lose their reference point, so the number it shows can quietly stop matching what you actually weigh. The fix for a drifting scale isn’t a new battery and it isn’t a sharp tap on the platform — it’s a proper calibration using the mode your specific model hides in its button sequence. The catch: there’s no universal button combo. The steps below cover the two most common procedures, followed by how to verify the result with known weights.
What Calibration Actually Does
Calibration resets the scale’s internal reference point so its readings match real weight again. It’s a two-part job: zeroing the scale on a hard, level surface, then running the model’s calibration mode with a known test weight.
Do it on a hard, level floor. Carpet, uneven tile, or a surface that vibrates will distort the result. If your bathroom floor is uneven, move the scale to the kitchen or hallway for calibration, then use it where you normally do.
The Two Most Common Calibration Procedures
Button labels aren’t standardized. Your scale may use CAL, MODE, UNIT, ZERO, LB, KG, or TARE — and the sequence your manual describes is the one that controls. Here are the two sequences that cover most consumer scales.
Procedure A: Calibration mode with “CAL” on the display
This is the most common consumer-scale procedure. Press ON/OFF to power the scale, then wait until the display settles on 0.0 or 0.00. Press and hold MODE until CAL appears. Press MODE again and the required calibration weight will flash on the display.
Procedure B: Zero-adjustment with two buttons
Some scales use a shorter sequence. Press and hold LB and ZERO together for two seconds, then release when the display reads 0 lb or 0 kg. Remove all weight from the platform and press ZERO.
If your scale’s buttons don’t match either sequence, the owner’s manual for your exact model is the controlling source. Some scales require service-level access; a calibration technical manual warns that entering calibration is “NOT recommended” unless you’re authorized by the local representative.
Verify the Result with Known Test Weights
Calibration mode only matters if the scale actually agreed with the weight you placed on it. Verify it with a known test weight afterward. Turn the scale on and let it read zero. Apply test weights starting with the smallest precision weight you have, confirm the readout matches the known weight within the manufacturer’s tolerance, then remove the weight to return to zero. Continue until you’ve tested at least half the scale’s capacity.
The common mistake: using a weight that isn’t precise. A bag of flour or a dumbbell is not a calibration weight. Dumbbells can be off by several percent, and a bag of flour’s label weight isn’t its actual weight. Use a certified calibration weight, or a set of them, if you want a trustworthy result.
If the scale fails verification, re-run calibration and check the platform is clean and level. If it still fails, the load cell may be damaged — at that point, replacement costs less than a repair.
When to Calibrate Instead of Replace
Calibration is worth attempting when the scale reads consistently off by a small margin, or after moving house, dropping it, or changing batteries. It’s not worth the effort when readings jump around randomly — that’s usually a failing load cell, not a calibration problem.
