For deeper damage that catches a fingernail, the product won’t help, but for the common surface scratches most daily drivers collect, the process is straightforward.

Prep the Surface Before Applying Scratch Remover

Scratch remover only works on paint that’s clean. Dirt particles trapped under the product create new scratches as you rub. Wash the panel with car wash soap, rinse thoroughly, and dry it completely. Park in the shade and let the surface cool if the car has been sitting in the sun.

Final Wipe-Down and Protection

After the scratch fades, remove all remaining residue with a clean microfiber towel. Then apply a coat of wax or sealant to the treated area. LIQUI MOLY recommends sealing with wax after use, and Turtle Wax notes the area will be protected with a chemical seal after application. This step restores the clear coat’s protective barrier that the abrasive polish just thinned.

If the scratch remains after the first application, repeat the process once. Two rounds handle most light damage. If it still shows, stop — more polishing risks cutting through the clear coat entirely, and the damage needs professional repair.
