Diameter alone doesn’t confirm a match — thread pitch and taper decide compatibility, so check those before ordering anything.

A pitch gauge is the fastest way to get the thread pitch. Without one, count threads over a 1/4-inch section and multiply by four, or count over a 1/2-inch section and double it, to get threads per inch (TPI). To tell tapered from straight threads, measure the thread diameter at several points along the shank; if the reading changes, the thread is tapered, which is the profile NPT uses.

Compare both ends of the assembly as well, because the fitting size can differ from one end to the other.
