The Core LED Light Bar Wiring Pattern
The standard 12V pattern runs battery positive through an inline fuse to relay terminal 30, out of terminal 87 to the light bar’s positive lead, and uses terminals 85 and 86 for the switch circuit. The light bar’s negative lead returns to a chassis ground or the battery’s negative post.

Where Do the Fuse, Relay, and Switch Each Go?
The fuse goes as close to the battery positive post as you can get it, the relay sits between the battery feed and the light bar, and the switch lives in the low-current control circuit. Layout order matters more than exact placement: fuse first, relay second, switch last.

- Route the harness through an existing firewall grommet where possible, and secure the rest with zip ties or wire loom.
- Keep every wire away from heat, moving parts, and sharp edges, since abrasion kills more harnesses than voltage does.
- Connect the color-matched leads at the light bar first, then the fused red battery lead to positive and the black lead to negative or chassis ground.
Grounding, Voltage, and Labeling Variations
Two compatibility checks belong in the same pass. If the vehicle runs a 24V electrical system, the relay must be a 24V-rated unit, and the bar itself has to be rated for 24V as well. And an industrial light bar rating is not a universal automotive spec: Banner Engineering’s industrial manual documents a 12 to 30 V DC operating range for one of its light-bar modes, but that spec says nothing about off-road bars sold for cars and trucks.
The inline fuse near the battery positive terminal is the standard protection against short circuits, so leave it in place and sized per the harness.
FAQs
Can I wire an LED light bar without a relay?
You can, but it’s a poor trade. Without a relay, the full light bar current runs through the dash switch, so the switch carries the entire load instead of just a small control current. Most 12V harnesses include the relay for exactly this reason. If yours doesn’t, add one rather than relying on switch ratings.
Are relay terminals 85 and 86 interchangeable?
Usually, yes. On most standard automotive relays the coil is not polarity-sensitive, so swapping 85 and 86 still works. The actual risk is labeling: some harness guides swap the numbers entirely, and wiring to the wrong pin can leave the switch dead. Confirm which terminal the harness uses before crimping, and follow the supplied diagram rather than a generic one.
Can I run a 12V light bar on a 24V system?
Not without changes. If the light bar goes on a 24V vehicle, the relay must be a 24V-rated unit, and the bar itself has to be rated for 24V as well. A 12V-only bar fed with 24V can overheat or fail quickly. Check both ratings before connecting anything, and when in doubt, run a step-down converter rated for the bar’s draw.
