Choose a heat pump when you want one electric system for year-round comfort, live in a mild or moderate climate, or are replacing expensive electric resistance heat. The economics are strongest there, and you avoid buying and maintaining two separate systems.

Stick with a standard AC if you already own a reliable furnace and only need cooling, or if you live in a very cold region with cheap natural gas. A furnace-and-AC pairing can still be the better annual-cost play there.

The decision variables are consistent across every source: climate zone, local electricity and gas prices, whether ductwork already exists, and whether you genuinely need both heating and cooling.
