A staple gun that fires cleanly one moment and jams the next usually isn’t a pressure problem. The cause is airflow — the tank holds pressure, but the pump can’t refill it fast enough while the tool keeps cycling.

PSI measures how hard the air pushes; CFM measures how much air moves per minute. Pneumatic staplers sit in a narrow pressure band and drink little air next to framing nailers, which is why a small compressor often handles them fine and why the wrong small compressor fails anyway.

How Much CFM Does A Staple Gun Need?

Stapling draws far less air than nailing: most setups need roughly 0.3 to 3.3 CFM at the pressure you run, delivered by the compressor at that same pressure.

That last part is where sizing goes off the rails. Compressor CFM ratings get quoted at both 50 PSI and 100 PSI, and delivered airflow drops as pressure climbs. A unit that looks generous at 50 PSI can be thin at 90 PSI, where the tool works.

  • Buying on PSI alone. A compressor can hit 120 PSI and still starve the tool if it can’t sustain airflow under repeated fire.
  • Trusting a peak CFM number. Tank size doesn’t fix a slow pump; the pump has to refill faster than the stapler empties.
