Fix Sign Out is Not Available Due to Restrictions

Are you seeing the message “Sign-Out is not available due to restrictions” on your iPhone or iPad?

This typically happens when Screen Time is enabled, which restricts your device from signing out.

This is a security feature by Apple, ensuring that even if someone knows your mobile passcode, they cannot sign out of your Apple ID without turning off Screen Time first, for which you can set up a separate passcode.

So don’t worry! If the option is greyed out for you, I will explain why this happens, even if you didn’t have Screen Time set up on your iPhone.

I will also provide simple steps to fix it, allowing you to sign out of your account without hassle.

Why Sign-Out option is greyed out?

If your sign-out option is greyed out with the message “Sign Out is not available due to restrictions,” it might be due to the following reasons:

  • Screen Time is turned on with account restrictions.
  • A company profile is installed on your iPhone.
  • You are on a Family Sharing plan, and your guardian has set up restrictions, meaning only they can change the settings.

If any of these apply, follow the instructions below to check for restrictions and fix the Apple ID option greyed-out issue.

Also, before starting on the solutions, check Apple’s system status for the iCloud Account and Sign In to see if there are any outages.

You can do this by visiting the Apple Support website to determine if any related services are down.

Step 1: Turn Off Screen Time Restriction on iPhone or iPad

You can do several things with Screen Time, from blocking apps to setting time limits. Additionally, settings such as preventing the Apple ID from being deleted or new accounts from being added options.

So if you have the setting for Allow Changes for Account set to Not Allow and the Privacy and Restrictions is enabled, the sign-out option for Apple ID will be greyed out due to Content and Privacy Restrictions.

Here’s how to check and turn off Screen Time on the iPhone:

Step 1: Go to Settings > Screen Time. Scroll down and tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.

1 11
2 9

Step 2: Turn off the toggle for Content and Privacy Restrictions.

3 8

Once you have done this close the setting app and again open it, go to Settings > Apple ID, and see if you can sign out of your Apple ID.

But if it doesn’t work the second step will surely fix your issue and also you don’t need to even turn off the Content and Privacy Restriction for that.

Step 2: Turn Off Screen Time Passcode

Here in this step, you just have to set the Allow Changes for Account to Allow, which I will show in the steps.

Then we will turn off the Screen Time passcode, and you don’t need to turn off Content and Privacy Restrictions. After that, the option will not be greyed out.

To verify the adding or removing of an Apple account is set to allow, go to Screen time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.

1 12
2 10

Then scroll down And Tap on Accounts > Set to allow if not.

3 9

After that, we have to Turn off the Passcode for the screen time.

So go back to screen time scroll down and Tap on the Change Screen Time Passcode option and from the popup Tap on Turn OFF Screen Time Passcode.

4 6
5 3

So you will be asked to enter the passcode you set earlier for Screen Time.

6 1

If you successfully remove the passcode, just close the Settings app, reopen it, and check the sign-out option for your account. It should no longer be greyed out.

If you don’t remember the passcode, you can tap on Change Screen Time Passcode and enter your Apple ID. You will receive a recovery code in your Apple ID if you have set it up as a backup.

However, if you did not set up your Apple ID as a recovery option when you initially created your passcode, you will not be able to turn off the passcode or remove the account from the iPhone.

In this scenario, you should contact Apple Support for assistance.

These two steps should resolve your issue. However, if your device is on a family-sharing plan and your guardian manages the settings, they may have imposed restrictions from their side.

The next step will discuss how to address that situation.

Step 3: Remove Screen Time From the Parent Device

Screen Time also serves as a parental control feature, allowing parents to limit the amount of time their child spends on an iPhone or iPad.

If the iPhone/iPad you are using is on Family sharing the issue may be due to a limit imposed by a parent or guardian.

To resolve this, the guardian or parent needs to turn off Screen Time from their device. Here’s how:

1) Go to the Settings app on the parent device. Tap Family, then select the child’s name. Tap Screen Time.

1 13

2) Select Turn Off Screen Time and enter the Screen Time passcode. Confirm by tapping Turn Off Screen Time again.

2 11

Give it a minute for the devices to sync, as changes can take some time to take effect.

If issues persist, consider completely turning off the Screen Time passcode on the parent device as well, then check if the sign-out option is still greyed out.

The other reason that usually grey out the Apple ID sign-out option is if you have an MDM (Mobile Device Management) profile installed.

If this is the case, follow the next steps to address the issue.

Step 4: Remove MDM

When a company, school, or university provides you with a device, MDM, or Mobile Device Management software, is typically installed.

This software enables them to restrict certain features, track the device, and implement security measures.

However, having an MDM profile also means you cannot log out of your Apple ID if the restriction is set by the organization, which is likely why the SignOut button is greyed out on your device.

To check if your device has a profile, go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.

Try if you can remove it yourself if not, you will need to contact the device manager or IT department to have the profile removed.

If you are still experiencing issues, the final step I recommend is to reset all settings on your iPhone. This action will revert all settings to their default state, which means you will lose Wi-Fi connections, Bluetooth pairings with your devices, and any VPN configurations.

To reset all settings go to General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset and then tap on Reset all settings

Note: Resetting all settings will not delete your data, such as images videos, and other files.

Wrapping Up

This guide covers all possible solutions to enable the sign-out option when it is greyed out due to privacy and content restrictions, MDM, or family sharing.

By following the step-by-step instructions, you’ll be able to sign out of your iPhone. However, if the issue persists, contacting Apple Support will provide additional assistance
