Choosing a PC case starts with matching its size to your motherboard’s form factor, then verifying clearance for the GPU, cooler, and PSU.
Most builders pick a case by looks and regret it when the graphics card doesn’t fit or the cooler hits the side panel. The reliable way to choose a PC case is to work backward from your components: motherboard size sets the minimum case size, and every other part sets a clearance requirement you check before you buy.
Start With The Motherboard Form Factor
The motherboard dictates which cases will work at all. The three common sizes are ATX (around 305 × 244 mm), Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX. An ATX case accepts all three sizes, a Micro-ATX case accepts Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX boards, and a Mini-ITX case accepts only Mini-ITX.
If you already own the motherboard, this single check eliminates most of the market. If you’re buying fresh, decide whether you need the expansion slots and RAM capacity of ATX or the smaller footprint of the compact boards. Clearance Checks That Decide Everything
Three measurements on your components determine whether they physically fit inside the case: GPU length, CPU cooler height, and PSU size. Each one has a matching spec on the case’s product page, and you compare them before buying.
- GPU length: compare the card’s length against the case’s maximum GPU clearance. Leave 10–20 mm of extra room so you can angle the card in during installation.
- CPU cooler height: tower coolers are the usual problem. A compact case might cap cooler height at 155 mm while your cooler stands 165 mm tall.
- PSU size: most cases take standard ATX power supplies, but smaller cases often require SFX or SFX-L units. Check before you buy a new PSU.
- Radiators and fans: verify radiator size and placement first, per Cooler Master’s guidance, because a front-mounted radiator eats into GPU clearance and changes airflow.
The case’s product page lists maximum GPU length and cooler height. Your components’ spec sheets list their physical dimensions. A quick side-by-side comparison takes two minutes and prevents a frustrating return.
Airflow, Ports, And Cable Management
Cooling performance comes down to airflow, which is why mesh-front cases generally outperform solid or tempered-glass front panels. A common effective layout is one front intake fan pulling cool air in and one rear or top exhaust fan pushing warm air out. If you’re aiming for a high-end build, add front intakes and compare the case’s rated fan support against your plan.
Front-panel ports are easy to overlook and annoying to lose. Confirm the case has the USB-A, USB-C, and audio jacks you want, then confirm your motherboard has the matching internal headers to power them. Cable management comes down to routing cutouts and the space behind the motherboard tray; look for at least 20–25 mm of depth back there so you’re not fighting to close the side panel.
Most modern builds use M.2 drives, but if you still run 3.5-inch hard drives or a 5.25-inch optical drive, verify the case has bays for them. And during assembly, confirm the motherboard standoffs are pre-installed and aligned with your board’s mounting holes before you screw anything down.

Common Mistakes That Waste Money
The classic failures all come from skipping the fit checks. Buying on appearance or RGB appeal alone is the most common, followed by assuming a case labeled ATX fits an ATX board without measuring. PSU cable length gets ignored too — a power supply with short cables won’t reach the top-left CPU connector on a full-ATX board. Just as often, buyers forget to check whether the front-panel USB-C header exists on the motherboard before picking a case with a USB-C port.
