How To Enable Keyboard On iPad | On-Screen Fix & Settings

The iPad keyboard is enabled automatically when you tap any text field, and you manage keyboards through Settings > General > Keyboard.

One wrong tap or a connected Bluetooth keyboard can make the on-screen keyboard vanish, leading many to wonder if there’s a hidden switch to turn it back on. The fix is almost always simpler than expected—either a text field needs another tap, or a single setting tweak brings the keyboard back.

How to Enable the On-Screen Keyboard

There is no dedicated “enable keyboard” switch. The iPad’s system keyboard appears automatically whenever you tap a text-entry field—the Notes app, Safari’s address bar, Messages, or any input box.

If the keyboard stays hidden, the most common cause is an external keyboard (Bluetooth or Smart Connector) that’s still connected. Apple’s troubleshooting path is: disconnect or turn off any external keyboard, then tap a text field again. On iPadOS, a connected physical keyboard suppresses the on-screen version by design.

Add, Remove, or Reorder Keyboards

You control which keyboards are available from one settings pane. Every change takes effect immediately.

Add a New Keyboard

  1. Open Settings > General > Keyboard.
  2. Tap Keyboards, then tap Add New Keyboard.
  3. Choose a language from the list. The new keyboard appears in your on-screen switcher and the external Control+Space cycle.

The language now appears in your keyboard list, and tapping the globe key in any app cycles through all enabled keyboards.

Remove a Keyboard

  1. Navigate to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
  2. Tap Edit in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap the red minus icon next to the keyboard you want to delete, then tap Delete.
  4. Tap Done to save the change.

The keyboard disappears from the list immediately and no longer appears in the globe-key switcher.

Reorder Your Keyboards

  1. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
  2. Tap Edit, then grab the handle (three horizontal lines) on the right of any keyboard and drag it to your preferred position.
  3. Tap Done.

The globe-key cycle now reflects your new order, starting with the keyboard at the top of your list.

Switch Between Keyboards On Screen

Two methods work once you have multiple keyboards enabled:

  • Tap the globe key (next to the 123 key) to cycle through your active keyboards.
  • Touch and hold the globe key (or the keyboard switch key) to pop up a menu of all enabled keyboards, then tap the one you want.

Switch Keyboards With an External Keyboard

If you use a physical keyboard with your iPad, press and hold the Control key, then press the Space bar to cycle through English, emoji, and any other added keyboards. On a Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard, the same method works alongside a dedicated globe key that also switches between keyboards.

Manage Typing Features and Sounds

Apple groups most on-screen keyboard settings under one roof. Adjusting these doesn’t “enable” the keyboard, but it changes how it behaves.

Why Won’t the On-Screen Keyboard Show?

If you’ve tapped a text field and nothing appears, run through this checklist. One of these is almost always the cause.
