How To Enable Voicemail On iPhone | Two Ways, One Guide

Setting up voicemail on an iPhone involves either the standard Carrier Voicemail through the Phone app or the newer Live Voicemail feature in iOS 18 and later, with both methods tailored to your carrier and device software.

The voicemail you see on your iPhone likely falls into one of two categories: the traditional Visual Voicemail that lists every message, or the newer Live Voicemail that transcribes calls in real time. Enabling either one only takes a few taps, but the exact steps depend on which version of iOS you’re running and whether your carrier supports the feature. Here is exactly how to get both working.

Setting Up Carrier Voicemail (Visual Voicemail)

Carrier Voicemail, often called Visual Voicemail, is the default system used by most US carriers. You set it up directly inside the Phone app, and once it’s active, all incoming messages appear as a list you can play in any order.

  • Open the Phone app and tap the Voicemail tab at the bottom of the screen. On iOS 18 and later with the Unified layout, you might need to tap the filter icon in the top right and select Voicemails.
  • If this is your first time, tap Set Up Now.
  • Create a voicemail password between 4 and 15 digits, then tap Done. You will be asked to re-enter it for confirmation.
  • Choose a greeting: Default plays a standard carrier message, or Custom lets you record your own. Tap Record, say your greeting, then tap Stop and Save.
  • Once saved, the Voicemail tab will show a Greeting button at the top left and a list of any messages below. You can revisit this tab to change your greeting or password anytime.

If you see a Call Voicemail button instead of Set Up Now, your carrier hasn’t provisioned Visual Voicemail on your line. Contact your carrier to add the feature, or dial your carrier’s voicemail number manually to check for messages.

Activating Live Voicemail (iOS 18 and Later)

Live Voicemail is Apple’s newer feature that answers calls and shows a real-time text transcript of the caller’s message while they’re still speaking. It requires iOS 18 or newer and only works on iPhones that support that OS version, starting with the iPhone 11 series. This feature is currently available in the United States and United Kingdom.

To turn it on:

  • Open the Settings app and tap Apps.
  • Scroll down and tap Phone.
  • Toggle Live Voicemail to the green On position.

That’s all it takes. When a caller leaves a message, your iPhone screen will show a live transcript as they speak. You can pick up the call during the message if you want to talk.

Visual Voicemail vs. Live Voicemail: What’s Different?

The table below breaks down the key differences between the two voicemail systems so you can decide which one matters more for your setup.

Feature Carrier Voicemail Live Voicemail
iOS requirement Any iPhone with iOS 17 or earlier iOS 18 or later (iPhone 11 and newer)
Real-time transcript No Yes — shows text as caller speaks
Carrier needed Yes — must support Visual Voicemail No — works over cellular or Wi-Fi
Regions supported Most carriers globally US and UK only at this time
Greeting options Default or custom Uses your carrier greeting

Message storage On carrier server, may delete after a set time On device, synced to iCloud

Why Is Voicemail Not Showing Up?

Sometimes the Voicemail tab looks different than expected, or the Live Voicemail toggle is nowhere to be found. The most common causes are straightforward to fix.

Problem Likely Cause What to Do
“Call Voicemail” button appears Visual Voicemail isn’t provisioned on your line Contact your carrier. Most major US carriers support it, but some prepaid or MVNO plans don’t include it.
Voicemail tab is missing Unified layout in iOS 18 hides the bottom tab Tap the filter icon (three lines or a circle) in the top right of the Phone app, then select Voicemails.
Live Voicemail toggle is missing Region not set to US or UK Go to Settings > General > Language & Region, and make sure Region is set to United States or United Kingdom.
Can’t set a password Entered fewer than 4 or more than 15 digits, or the two entries didn’t match Start the setup over. The password must be between 4 and 15 digits, and the two entries must match exactly.
No SIM card or no service Carrier network not recognized by the iPhone Make sure your SIM card is inserted correctly and your iPhone shows your carrier name in the top left. If it says “No Service,” contact your carrier.

How to Manage Your Voicemail After Setup

Once either system is active, a few small actions will keep it running smoothly. Change your carrier voicemail password or greeting at any time by opening the Voicemail tab in the Phone app and tapping Greeting or the settings gear icon. For Live Voicemail, you can turn it on or off from Settings > Apps > Phone — the toggle is right there if you ever want to disable the real-time transcripts. Whichever method you choose, your iPhone will alert you to new messages with a badge on the Phone app icon and a notification center entry.
