How To Erase App History | Clear Both Platforms

App history stays on Apple and Google’s servers permanently, but you can hide or remove visible records on iPhone and Android in a few steps.

The steps for how to erase app history differ between iPhone and Android, but both platforms let you hide what you don’t want seen. Here’s what actually works on each device and what you need to accept about what stays on the server.

Can You Permanently Delete App Purchase History?

The short answer is no. Apple and Google keep purchase records on their servers for billing, licensing, and support reasons, and no setting lets you wipe that data entirely. What you can do is clean up the visible list inside the App Store and Play Store so old downloads stop showing up. On Android you get slightly more flexibility — you can also clear search history and remove entries from Google My Activity. On both platforms, fully removing the app and its data from your device requires a separate step.

Erasing App History On iPhone And iPad: What’s Actually Possible

On iOS, hiding a purchase removes it from the App Store’s My Purchases list but does not delete the record from Apple’s systems. The app remains downloadable from its product page, and you must hide entries one at a time — there is no Select All option.

  1. Open the App Store and tap your Profile icon (top right).

  2. Tap Purchased then My Purchases.

  3. Swipe left on any app and tap Hide.

  4. Repeat for each app you want to remove from the list.

Hiding only affects the purchased list. To remove the app and its local data from your phone, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage, select the app, and tap Delete App. This step is irreversible — deleted app data cannot be recovered unless you have a separate backup. Apple’s support page for removing apps confirms that deleting an app removes it and its data from the device.

App data can also linger in iCloud backups if you do not uncheck the app in Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Manage Storage > Backups.

Does Android Let You Delete App History?

Android gives you more tools than iOS. You can remove apps from the Play Store’s Not installed list, clear your device search history, and delete Google Play activity from your Google account. Purchase records remain on Google’s servers, but the visible list can be cleaned up completely.

  1. Open the Google Play Store and tap your Profile icon.

  2. Tap Manage apps & device then the Manage tab.

  3. Tap the Installed filter and switch to Not installed.

  4. Tap the checkbox next to each app, then tap the trash icon (top right) and confirm Remove.

  5. To clear search history, go to Profile icon > Settings > General > Account and device preferences, scroll to History, and tap Clear device search history.

To delete the app’s local data on the device, long-press the app, tap Info (i), go to Storage, and tap Clear cache then Clear data. This resets the app to its fresh-install state.

For a deeper cleanup, visit myactivity.google.com on your Android phone. Tap Delete, choose All time, then Next and Delete to wipe all Google activity. You can also filter by product — tap Search, select Google Play, and delete only Play-related entries. To automate this, set up Auto-delete under Settings > Data & privacy > History settings and choose a duration of 3, 18, or 36 months.

Mistake Why It Does Not Work What To Do Instead
Hiding = permanent deletion Only removes the item from view Use Delete App to remove local data
Bulk hiding on iPhone No Select All option exists Hide each app individually
Deleting app = erasing history App still appears in purchase list Hide or Remove after deleting
Ignoring iCloud backups Data persists in backup files Unselect app in iCloud backup settings
Confusing Library with history Old UI uses Library tab Use Manage apps > Not installed

App History Management Checklist

Work through these steps in order to clean up app history on both platforms:

  • On iPhone: Hide purchases one by one from App Store > Profile > Purchased > My Purchases (swipe left, tap Hide). Then delete the app itself from Settings > General > iPhone Storage if you want the local data gone.
  • On Android: Remove apps from Play Store > Manage apps & device > Not installed (check boxes, tap trash icon). Clear device search history from Settings > General > Account and device preferences. Delete Google Play activity at myactivity.google.com.
  • For local data: On iPhone, use Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Delete App. On Android, long-press the app, tap Info > Storage > Clear data.
  • For cloud backups: On iPhone, uncheck the app in iCloud backup settings. On Android, app data in Google Drive follows the app’s own sync settings.
  • Accept the limit: Purchase records stay on Apple’s and Google’s servers permanently. Hiding or removing them from the store view is as close to deletion as either platform allows.
