How To Erase Search History On Phone | Browser And Google

Phone search history is erased by clearing browser history, Google app history, and saved account activity.

A shared phone, a synced account, or one old search sitting under the search bar can reveal more than you meant to leave behind. The job behind how to erase search history on phone has three parts: the browser list on the device, searches saved inside an app, and search activity saved to your Google Account.

Start with the browser you use most. Then remove Google Search history if you search while signed in. Last, turn off or shorten future saving so the same list does not rebuild by tomorrow.

Before You Erase Anything, Know Where History Is Stored

Phone search history can live in more than one place, so deleting only one screen may leave another list behind. Browser history, Google app suggestions, and account activity each need a separate pass.

Browser history removes pages and searches stored by Safari or Chrome on the phone. Google Account history removes searches tied to your signed-in account, which can show again on another phone, tablet, or computer using the same account.

Erase Phone Search History Across Browser And Account Data

Safari and Chrome store phone browsing history separately, so use the steps for the browser you actually use. Apple lists the current Safari path as Settings > Apps > Safari, then Clear History and Website Data in Apple’s Safari history removal page.

Safari On iPhone

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Apps, then tap Safari.
3. Tap Clear History and Website Data.
4. Choose the timeframe, then tap Clear History.

Safari removes the selected history and website data, but AutoFill stays in place. A gray button usually means there is no Safari data to erase or Screen Time content restrictions are blocking the action.

Chrome On Android

1. Open Chrome.
2. Tap More, the three-dot button to the right of the address bar.
3. Tap Delete browsing data.
4. Pick a time range. Use All time if you want the full local list gone.
5. Tap More options if you want to choose data types, then tap Delete data.

The Chrome history list should stop showing the erased visits after the delete dialog closes. Cookies and cached files are separate boxes, so leave them unchecked if you only want the visible history list gone.

Chrome On iPhone

1. Open Chrome.
2. Tap More, the three-dot menu.
3. Tap Delete Browsing Data.
4. Choose a Time Range.
5. Tap Browsing Data, select the data types, tap Confirm, then tap Delete Browsing Data.

Chrome removes the selected data from the phone and, for synced Chrome data, from other devices signed in with the same Google Account.

How Do You Remove Google Search History From The Phone?

Google Search history needs its own deletion because browser history and Google Account history are not the same list. Google says searches saved to your account can be managed from Profile picture > Search history in the Google app on Android and iPhone in Google’s Search history controls.

For the Google app while signed in, open the app, tap your Profile picture or Initial, tap Search history, then choose Delete and Delete all time. To stop saving new searches, go to Search history > Controls, tap Turn off under Web & App Activity, or choose Turn off and delete activity.

For one Android search suggestion, tap the Google search bar, touch and hold the recent query, then tap Delete. For iPhone searches stored on the device, open the Google app, tap the Search bar, tap View all, then tap Clear all and Clear on-device history.

Why Does History Still Show After You Delete It?

Deleted history can still appear when the phone was offline, the wrong account was open, or only browser history was removed. The fix is to check the account and the app where the old search appears.

If erased Google history comes back on another device, connect that device to the internet and let it sync. If the Google app still suggests old searches while signed out, erase on-device app history and turn off signed-out search customization in the Google app privacy settings.

The Two-Minute Privacy Sweep

A full phone search cleanup is easiest when you follow the places where searches can be stored. Run this short sequence when you want the visible traces gone from both the phone and the account.

1. Erase Safari or Chrome history for the time range you care about.
2. Open the Google app and delete signed-in Search history.
3. Remove signed-out or on-device Google app searches if they still show under the search bar.
4. Turn off Web & App Activity or set auto-delete to 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months.
5. Check any other signed-in phone or tablet after it reconnects to the internet.

After those steps, the phone should stop showing old searches in the browser list, the Google app search bar, and the signed-in Google activity page.
