Press F11 on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + F on Mac, to leave Firefox full screen.
One hidden toolbar can make Firefox feel trapped; after you know how to exit Firefox full screen, the tabs, address bar, and taskbar come back in one move. Start with the shortcut, then use the top menu if your laptop or keyboard layout blocks the function row.
Firefox full-screen mode only hides the browser frame. Firefox has not closed, your tabs are still open, and the page should return to the same place after full screen is off.
Use The Keyboard Shortcut First
Firefox full-screen mode is a toggle, so the same shortcut that enters the view also leaves it. Press F11 on Windows or Linux, and press Command + Shift + F on Mac.
Compact laptops may need Fn + F11 because the top row can be mapped to brightness, volume, or media controls. Hold Fn, tap F11 once, then release both keys.
- Windows desktop: press
F11. - Windows laptop: try
Fn + F11ifF11changes volume or brightness. - Linux desktop: press
F11. - Mac: press
Command + Shift + F.
The address bar and tab strip return when the shortcut works. The Windows taskbar or Mac menu area should also be visible again, depending on your desktop setup.
Exit Firefox Full Screen When The Toolbar Is Hidden
Firefox keeps the toolbar reachable while full screen is active. Move the pointer to the top edge of the display until the tabs and address bar slide down.
After the toolbar appears, click the three-line Menu button in the top-right corner. Select the exit full-screen icon; Firefox returns to a normal browser window.
Use the table below to match the screen in front of you with the exit move that fits it.
| What You Have | Action To Try | Result You Should See |
|---|---|---|
| Windows desktop keyboard | Press F11 |
Firefox restores tabs, address bar, and taskbar access |
| Windows compact laptop | Press Fn + F11 |
The function row sends the full-screen toggle instead of media control |
| Linux Firefox window | Press F11 |
The browser frame returns around the page |
| Mac Firefox window | Press Command + Shift + F |
The Firefox toolbar and normal window controls return |
| Mouse only | Move the pointer to the top edge, then use Menu | The exit full-screen icon becomes reachable |
| Page video filled the display | Press Esc or use the video player’s full-screen button |
The video shrinks while Firefox may stay open |
| Browser is only maximized | Use the window restore button in the title bar | The window gets smaller but Firefox was not in full-screen mode |
Mozilla’s Firefox full-screen help page gives the same menu path: show the toolbar, open the menu button, and select the exit full-screen option.
Why Won’t F11 Leave Firefox Full Screen?
F11 can fail when the laptop treats the function row as hardware controls. Fn + F11 sends the browser shortcut on many compact keyboards.
Some keyboards have an Fn Lock setting that changes how the top row behaves. If F11 changes brightness, volume, or a media player, hold Fn and tap F11 instead.
Browser focus can also matter. Click once inside the Firefox page, then press the shortcut again. If a video player, game, remote desktop, or web app has captured the keyboard, leave that page-level full screen first with Esc, then try the Firefox shortcut.
Tell Firefox Full Screen From A Web Video
Firefox full-screen mode hides the whole browser frame; video full screen usually belongs to the player inside the page. The exit step changes depending on which layer took over the display.
A web video full-screen button usually sits inside the video player. Pressing Esc often shrinks the video, but Firefox can remain in its own full-screen mode afterward, so F11 may still be needed.
| Screen Clue | Mode You Are In | Exit Move |
|---|---|---|
| No tabs, no address bar, page fills display | Firefox full-screen mode | F11, Fn + F11, or Command + Shift + F |
| Only a video fills the display | Video player full screen | Esc or the player’s full-screen button |
| Tabs appear when the pointer touches the top edge | Firefox full-screen mode with hidden toolbar | Open Menu, then select the exit full-screen icon |
| Window controls are visible but the browser is huge | Maximized window | Click the restore button beside the close button |
Remote desktop or game ignores F11 |
Page or app captured the keyboard | Click outside the embedded app or press Esc, then retry the Firefox shortcut |
Which Exit Method Should You Use?
The shortcut should be tried before the mouse method when you can use the keyboard. The menu method works better when a laptop function row, damaged F11 button, or page capture blocks the shortcut.

Fn + F11if your laptop changes brightness, volume, or playback. - Press

Firefox is back to normal when the tab strip, address bar, and window controls stay visible without holding the pointer at the top edge.
