How to Measure Toddler Boot Size | Fit Feet Right

Measure the toddler’s foot length from heel to longest toe, use the larger of the two feet, and match it to the boot brand’s size chart.

Getting toddler boot size right starts with one simple measurement, but most parents skip a step and end up with boots that pinch or flop off. Here’s what to do.

Measure Both Feet While They Stand

Grab a ruler, a piece of paper, and a pencil. Have your toddler stand with their weight evenly distributed on both feet. This matters because a loaded foot spreads and lengthens slightly, so a seated measurement can come up short.

Trace each foot or mark the heel and longest toe directly, then measure the distance between the two points. Repeat on the second foot. The shorter foot can throw off the whole fit if you pick it first.

Measure barefoot for the cleanest result, or over the thin socks or tights your child will actually wear with the boots.

Match the Measurement to the Brand’s Chart

Toddler boot sizes are not universal. One brand’s size 6 can be another brand’s size 5, because U.S., UK, EU, and centimeter scales all map differently. The exact size number matters less than the foot length in inches or centimeters, so always compare your measurement to that specific brand’s chart.

Most U.S. brands label toddler sizes as “Tots'” sizes like 4 Tots’ or 5 Tots’, while some use the 1-through-10 “Little Kids/Toddler” scale.

Foot length alone usually gets the size right, but width matters for boots, since they run narrow or wide depending on the brand. If the chart offers width options, measure the widest part of the foot and compare. A boot that fits in length but squeezes across the instep will make every walk miserable.

U.S. Toddler Size Approx. Foot Length Fit Notes
4 Tots’ 4.4 in / 11.2 cm Early walkers, thin socks
5 Tots’ 4.8 in / 12.2 cm Measured example, average width
6 Tots’ 5.1 in / 13.0 cm Measured example, room for thick socks
7 Tots’ 5.5 in / 14.0 cm Growth spurt territory
8 Tots’ 5.8 in / 14.8 cm Check width on wide brands
9 Tots’ 6.2 in / 15.8 cm Nearing big-kid sizes
10 Tots’ 6.6 in / 16.8 cm Transition to Little Kids scale

Check the Fit Before You Commit

Too-small footwear crowds toes and causes discomfort, so if the paper outline of your child’s foot barely fits inside the boot without curling at the edges, the boot is too small regardless of what the label says.

Have your toddler walk a few steps in the boots with the socks they will wear outdoors. The heel should stay put without sliding, and the toes should wiggle freely.

When in Doubt, Size Up

The trade-off is a clunkier walk and a higher chance of tripping, so the decision comes down to how close the current measurement sits to the next size boundary.

If the measurement lands right on the line between two sizes, choose the larger one, especially for winter boots worn with thick socks. For rain boots or summer styles worn barefoot, stick closer to the true measurement.

Once you have the size, it helps to know which boots actually hold up for active toddlers.
