How to Pack a Bearing with Grease? | Without Overfilling

Pack grease through the bearing’s large end until it seeps out evenly on the opposite side, either by hand or with a mechanical packer.

An under-packed bearing runs dry, heats up, and howls until the race is wrecked — and slathering grease on the outside of the bearing does nothing to protect the rollers inside. The correct way to pack a bearing with grease is to force lubricant through the rollers, cage, and cone until it emerges evenly around the far side, then wipe the excess off the outside. Timken’s guide shows two proven routes: packing by hand and packing with a mechanical packer.

Packing A Bearing By Hand

Hand packing works best for a single bearing or two and needs nothing beyond clean hands and fresh grease. It forces grease through the bearing from the large end until it flows out evenly on the opposite side.

Start with clean hands or new latex gloves — grit trapped in grease turns into grinding paste inside the bearing. Pull the cone assembly out of the hub and inspect the rollers and race for pitting, flaking, or scoring first; a bearing that shows damage gets replaced, not repacked.

Then follow Timken’s hand packing sequence:

  1. Press the large end of the cone assembly down into the grease.
  2. Rotate the bearing until grease forces out evenly around the small end.
  3. Smear the excess grease across the outside of the bearing.

Under-packing is the failure to watch for. If you stop too soon, the rollers stay dry in the middle even though the outside looks greased, so keep rotating until you see that even flow of grease push through the opposite side.

Using A Mechanical Bearing Packer

A mechanical packer pushes grease through the bearing with one firm action and keeps the mess off your hands, which makes it the faster choice when you’re doing several bearings. It is the second method in Timken’s bearing packing guide, and the setup takes seconds.

  1. Set the cone assembly small end down in the packer’s funnel.
  2. Plug the bore of the large end with the conical retainer that came with the packer.
  3. Press down firmly to force grease through the rollers, cage, and cone.
  4. Lift the bearing out and smear excess grease on the outside.

Note that the packer fills the bearing itself — it does not control the grease load in the hub, and that is where the fill rules below come in.

How Much Grease Does A Bearing Need?

Enough to coat every functional surface — but never enough to stuff the housing. Timken says the housing should normally be 1/3 to 1/2 full of grease during assembly. Schaeffler, the bearing manufacturer, sets the fill inside the bearing by operating speed: high-speed bearings get only 20% to 30% of their free space, while low-speed bearings can be packed fuller.

Two mistakes cancel out good packing. Under-filling leaves the rollers dry, which is why the even-flow test matters. Overfilling the housing cavities leaves no room for grease displaced from the bearing, so it co-rotates and churns, building heat instead of protecting the bearing.
