How to Properly Grease a Bearing? | The Full Procedure

Greasing a bearing correctly means cleaning the fitting, using the right compatible grease, and filling to about one-third to one-half of free space — not until it spills out.

Most bearing failures trace back to one of two mistakes: too little grease or way too much of it. Either way, the bearing overheats, churns, and dies early. The proper procedure is straightforward once you know the targets. Here’s the step order that works for rolling-element bearings with grease fittings, plus the numbers that keep you in the safe zone.

Clean the Fitting First

The single most common error is pumping fresh grease through a dirty zerk fitting. Dirt and old hardened grease on the surface get pushed straight into the bearing, where they act like grinding paste. That contamination is a leading contributor to premature bearing failure.

Before the grease gun touches anything, wipe the fitting and the surrounding area clean. On heavily caked fittings, use a wire brush or a clean rag to work the grime loose. If the bearing already contains old grease, remove it or follow the machine’s relubrication procedure before adding the new charge. Fresh grease mixed into badly degraded old grease does the bearing no favors.

Choose the Right Grease and Quantity

Schaeffler’s lubrication guidance stresses using the correct grease type and avoiding incompatible mixes. If you do not know what is currently in the bearing, verify compatibility before topping up — mixing incompatible soap bases can cause the thickener to separate and the grease to fail outright. When possible, stick with the same brand and type the manufacturer specified.

For quantity, the common technical target across bearing manufacturers is filling one-third to one-half of the bearing’s free internal space. High-speed bearings sit at the lower end of that range; slower, heavier-duty setups can take more. For relubrication of compact bearings, Schaeffler notes filling to about 50% to 80% of the initial greasing quantity. The point is measuring your charge, not guessing.

Apply Slow, Then Check the Result

Attach the grease gun and pump slowly. Fast pumping builds back pressure that can blow seals or push grease where it does not belong. Stop when you reach the calculated amount, or — on designs with relief ports — when you see fresh grease purging from the relief area. Wipe away any excess immediately, and replace caps and plugs.

Schaeffler recommends relubricating with the bearing still warm from operation, rotating if it is safe to do so, and finishing before the bearing comes fully to rest. After greasing, run the machine briefly and watch for abnormal heat, noise, vibration, or back pressure. If back pressure builds during the stroke, stop and inspect the grease passages for blockage.

Hand-Packing Bearings Without Fittings

For open bearings you are installing yourself, place grease in your palm, press the bearing edge into it, and rotate the bearing repeatedly until grease works through the rolling elements and fills all gaps. Finish with a light outer coating — not a heavy smear, just enough to protect the surfaces.

Why Overgreasing Does More Harm Than Good

Over-lubrication causes churning, which heats the grease until it thins and leaks, and heat that shortens bearing life. Excess grease also blocks relief ports and drags against seals. The “just until it comes out” habit is exactly what the technical guidance warns against. Bearing manufacturers publish grease-amount formulas precisely because volume matters — Those are starting estimates, not gospel, but they will put you inside the safe band. Smallest bearings that are sealed for life generally are not regreased at all unless the original equipment manufacturer specifies otherwise. Prying open a sealed bearing to grease it does more harm than leaving it alone. Check the bearing’s design first; if it has a seal on both sides and no relubrication point, schedule a replacement instead of a grease job.
