What Surface Should You Use?
Set the track up on a solid baseboard or table, not carpet. Carpet fibers work into locomotive gears and can stall small motors, and a soft surface lets track joints flex apart. A 4×8-foot sheet of plywood gives you room for a loop plus scenery later, and it stays flat enough to keep rails level. If your set is in a larger gauge, adjust the footprint up. A 00-gauge railway needs about 6×4 feet, while a TT:120 set fits comfortably in 3×2 feet. When you place the track, leave a few inches of clearance around the outside of the loop so cars don’t hang over the edge on curves.
Keep the work area clean and well lit. NMRA’s safety guidance suggests wearing goggles when there’s a risk of flying chips, which mostly matters if you’re drilling or cutting the baseboard rather than during the setup itself.
Assembling The Track Loop

Your set’s track type matters here. Lionel’s Keystone Super Freight manual specifies O-27 or Lionel-compatible larger track, while Ready-to-Play sets use their own plastic track system. Check your manual for the exact track type before buying extra sections.
Wiring The Power And Placing The Locomotive
Find the terminal track section with the wires attached. Connect it to your transformer or power pack — the Keystone Super Freight manual has you connect the terminal section to the CW-80 Transformer, then plug that into a 120-volt wall outlet. Never plug in the transformer before the wiring is complete.
Place the engine on the track first, before any cars. Seat all wheels within the rails and make sure the pickups underneath are resting on the metal rails. Lionel’s instructions say to slide the locomotive’s power switch to ON, then power up the transformer slowly. You should hear the motor hum and see the headlight come on.
Run the engine a full lap before adding cars. If it stalls at a specific joint, that connection is the problem — reseat it and try again.
Keystone Super Freight locomotives run on 8-18 volts AC, and track voltage shouldn’t exceed 19 volts AC in Command Control operation. For most beginner setups, starting at the low end of the transformer’s range and creeping up until the train moves smoothly is the right approach.
