Using a heat press involves four steps: set the temperature, set the time, set the pressure, and press the transfer for the instructed dwell time.
Getting a clean, permanent transfer comes down to preparation and consistency. The machine does the heavy lifting; your job is to set it correctly and follow the transfer’s instructions. Before you start, plug in the press and turn on the power switch, then walk through the setup in the order below.
Setting the Temperature, Time, and Pressure
Every heat press has the same three controls. On a typical model, like the one documented in the Northeastern Makerspaces guide, you use the Mode Select button to choose the temperature setting, adjust it with the +/- keys, then set the time the same way. The usable range on that machine is 205°F to 430°F (96°C to 220°C).
Pressure is set independently. On most presses, a knob on top of the machine turns clockwise to increase pressure and counterclockwise to decrease it. The right pressure depends on the material and the transfer.

How to Place the Garment and the Transfer
Position the garment or blank flat on the lower platen, with the area to be printed centered under the upper platen. If the material is wrinkled or damp, a quick pre-press — closing the machine for a few seconds — removes moisture and wrinkles that would otherwise distort the design.
When the platen reaches the set temperature, place the transfer paper on the garment in the exact spot you prepped. Cover it with a Teflon sheet or protective paper. On many manuals, this is required to shield both the design and the heating element. Then lower the platen, lock it, and let the timer count down.
If you’re working with multiple colors of vinyl, note that some transfer types require different settings. One important rule: if the transfer calls for mirrored artwork, apply it before you press — you cannot fix a mirrored image after the heat has set it. The transfer media’s instructions control the final settings, not a generic chart.
What to Do During and After the Press
Once the platen is locked, the timer runs automatically. Do not hold the substrate in your hand or against your body during the dwell time. Keep the machine on a heat-resistant surface with clearance around it, and keep flammable materials away from the heated plates.
When the timer ends, open the press. Then comes a step that damages more designs than any other: peel timing. Peel hot or cold only as your transfer manufacturer directs. If you peel a design that needs to cool first, the ink can lift off with the carrier sheet. If you let a hot-peel design cool completely, it may be impossible to remove the carrier at all.
After the print comes off the carrier, switch the machine off and unplug it. Do not touch the platens until they have fully cooled.
