When you crank the A/C on a sweltering day, the evaporator is the component doing the heavy lifting. Why Does the Evaporator Remove Moisture?

Where Is the Evaporator and How Does It Fit In the System?

The evaporator core is located inside the dashboard, mounted within the HVAC module. It sits between the expansion valve and the compressor on the low-pressure side of the loop, playing a central role in the refrigerant’s journey. The expansion valve meters refrigerant into the evaporator, and the compressor pulls the vaporized refrigerant back out to restart the cycle.

Because it’s part of a sealed refrigerant system, servicing the evaporator requires handling pressurized refrigerant. This is not a part to open casually—proper service requires recovery equipment and gauges best left to a professional technician.

Evaporator vs. Condenser: What’s the Difference?

A common mix-up is confusing the evaporator with the condenser. The two parts do opposite jobs, even though both are heat exchangers. The evaporator absorbs heat from inside the cabin, while the condenser rejects heat to the outside air, typically from the front of the vehicle near the radiator.
