A galvanized pipe is a steel or iron pipe coated with a protective layer of zinc to resist rust and corrosion, widely used in older U.S. plumbing and still common in construction, irrigation, and electrical conduit.

If you own a home built before the 1960s, there’s a good chance some of its plumbing is galvanized pipe. That gray-silver metal tubing with threaded connections was the standard for decades — and it still shows up in fencing, scaffolding, and HVAC systems today. How Galvanized Pipe Is Made

The process is called hot-dip galvanizing. The steel or iron pipe is cleaned, then immersed in a bath of molten zinc at roughly 840°F. The zinc bonds metallurgically to the surface, creating two layers of protection: a hard barrier that blocks moisture and oxygen, and a sacrificial layer that corrodes first if the coating gets scratched.

Common Uses: Plumbing, Construction, and Conduit

Galvanized pipe is not one thing with one job. It’s used in several distinct applications, and confusing them is a common mistake during home inspections.

  • Water supply plumbing. The most familiar use in older homes (pre-1960 construction). Threaded sections carry drinking water to fixtures. These pipes are typically Schedule 40 or Schedule 80, sized by Nominal Pipe Size (NPS).
  • Electrical conduit. Galvanized rigid steel conduit protects wiring in commercial and industrial buildings. This is not water plumbing — a common mix-up when inspecting a home’s pipework.
  • Structural and fencing. Scaffolding frames, handrails, chain-link fence posts, and outdoor frameworks often use galvanized pipe for its corrosion resistance and strength.

Spotting Galvanized Pipe: The Scratch Test

Because it looks similar to other coated steel products (and can be confused with copper from a distance), the quickest identification method is the scratch test. Find an exposed section — often near the water heater, under a sink, or in a basement ceiling — and scratch the surface firmly with a screwdriver or the edge of a nickel. Galvanized pipe will show a metallic gray-silver color underneath. Copper, by contrast, shows a reddish-brown. Another quick check: a magnet sticks to galvanized steel (it’s magnetic) but not to copper. Those two tests together will settle most identification questions.

Lifespan and the Drinking Water Concern

Galvanized steel pipe typically lasts 20 to 70 years, depending on water chemistry, coating quality, and environment.
