The numbers describe how many speakers the receiver can drive and how many subwoofers it feeds. A 5.1 setup means five full-range channels plus one low-frequency effects channel: left, center, right, left surround, and right surround, plus the sub.
Modern receivers reach well past that. Current models are commonly listed with 7.2-channel and 9.2-channel capability, and a 9.2 layout can use front, center, surround, surround back, and height speakers alongside up to two subwoofers. Some units advertise 7.2-channel surround with 5.2.2-channel flexibility, where the last pair of numbers counts height channels.
The limits are hard, not soft. A 5.1 receiver cannot natively reproduce a layout that needs more channels — no menu setting fixes that. You add hardware or you upgrade the receiver.

How To Connect And Set It Up
Wiring follows a fixed order, and getting one step wrong costs you sound quality later.
- Connect the receiver’s video or monitor output to the TV so the on-screen setup menu is visible.
- Connect speakers to the matching terminals and keep polarity correct — plus to plus, minus to minus. Reversed polarity degrades sound quality.
- Connect the subwoofer to the receiver’s subwoofer or LFE output.

Can I use a receiver without a subwoofer?
